We had childproof locks on all doors except the door to the balcony because it sits eight feet off the ground. My 99-year-old demented mother somehow got out this way. Before we could install a childproof lock, my husband lugged a 100-pound dumbbell to block the door. In the process, he had to rest several times and injured his knuckle. When he told my 6-foot-4 son-in-law about the ordeal, my son-in-law picked up the 100-pound dumbbell as easily as I picked up a 3-pound one. He said, “You see I can do this, yet I am afraid of your daughter.”
